Federal Skill Trades Worker Program

Federal Skill Trades Worker Program

The government of Canada recognizes that communities and cities across the country experience labour shortages in many skilled trades occupations. Consequently, the Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC, formerly referred to as the Federal Skilled Trades Program) is one of the three federal programs for skilled workers who want to become Permanent Residents by qualifying in a skilled trade.

To qualify for the program, an applicant must meet these requirements:

  • Meet the Language requirements in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  • Have 2 years of full time work experience or equivalent experience in Skilled Trade within 5 years before applying.
  • Meet job requirements set out by National Occupational Classification, except for a certificate of qualification.
  • No specific education requirement. But for an improved score, an applicant can get points for their certificate, degree or diploma they hold.
  • Proof of funds.
  • Must be admissible to Canada.

The program allows qualified trades persons from around the world to immigrate to Canada permanently. Prior to 2015, Federal Skilled Trades applications were managed on a first-come, first-served basis. Since 2015, however, applications are processed under the Express Entry immigration selection system.
